Before Christ - The Spirit of the Prophet Elias

1155 - The Hermits of Carmel

1237 - Westward expansion
* The Order is admitted to the west, retaining the name, "Order of the Brothers of Our Lady"
* A General Chapter in the West is held in 1247
* The rule is adapted to the conditions of the times ( houses could be located in towns; Friars were admitted to apostolic work; the cenobitical, or community, form of life was developed; the status of Mendicant Order was adopted)

1451 - John Soreth becomes General of the Order
* Carmelite Nuns are instituted

1562 - Beginning of the Discalced Carmelites in Spain
* St. Teresa of Jesus founds the Reform of the Nuns
* St. John of the Cross becomes the first Friar and founds the Reform of the Fathers

1790 - Discalced Carmelite Nuns come to the colonies

1962 - Vatican Council II
* Return to the Spirit of the Founder: Call to Holiness

1991 - New Constitutions
* Calced and Discalced branches come closer together
